Professional and Social Background

Amelia Fauzia has taught and conducted research related to Islamic history of Indonesia, Islamic philanthropy, and contemporary issues of Islam in Indonesia, such as on radicalization, religion, and women. She has taught at Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University or UIN Jakarta, at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (commenced in 1999). In October 2019 Indonesian Minister of Research and High Education granted her a title as Professor in Islamic History and Civilization. She has been Senior Visiting Fellow at the faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (UNSW Canberra) since 2011 to 2024). She was a research fellow at RSIS, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (2020-2021), and Visiting Senior Research Fellow at Cluster Religion and Globalisation, the Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore (NUS) from 2015 to 2018. From June 2019 to 2023, she served as the head of the Master Program of Islamic History and Culture, UIN Jakarta. Now, she serves as Head of Institute for Research and Community Empowerment (LP2M) UIN Jakarta (2023-2027). She is one of researchers in the HUMA project with Peace Research Institute Oslo, Norway (2020-2023) and consultant to the Protect Program of UNDP on inclusive philanthropy fundraising.

Prof Fauzia’s previous career are Deputy Director (secretary) of the Research Institute for Community Outreach (LP2M) of UIN Jakarta from 2010 to March 2015, a fellow at the Center for the Study of Islam and Society (PPIM) from 2014 to 2015, a Visiting fellow of Leiden Institute of Area Studies (LIAS) in 2014, and Visiting Fellow of International Institute of Asian Studies, the Netherlands (2006).

She is cofounder of the Social Trust Fund, humanitarian and charitable institution on UIN Jakarta, of which she became vice director since 2011 and selected as Director in September 2015 to date. She established a center for rural community development and social entrepreneurship (CERCONDESO) located in Bogor, as a lab for Social Trust Fund and UIN Jakarta community development activities. With her colleague, she created community health saving program called Bungkesmas—Tabungan Kesehatan Masyarakat (in 2010) for poor people (especially women), an innovative health saving with micro insurance program that runs from 2012 to date, in collaboration with various NGOs, microfinance institutions and local governments.

Prof Fauzia sits as a board member of National Waqf Board (Badan Wakaf Indonesia) in Research and Development division for 2010-2017 and as representative of Asian Muslim Action Network (AMAN) and deputy from 2011-now. She serves as one of alumni association boards of UIN Jakarta called IKALUIN, from 2012 to 2025. She is co-founder of Center for Language and Culture (later become the Center for the Study of Religion and Culture), was its executive secretary from 2000 to 2008 and was Director of the center from 2009 to 2010.

She holds a Master of Arts in Islamic Studies from the University of Leiden in 1998 (writing on Ratu Adil messianic movement) and holds a PhD from the University of Melbourne in 2009 (writing on faith and the state: history of islamic phialnthropy in Indonesia). She has been focusing on Islamic philanthropy since 2002, when she led a global project on Islamic philanthropy for social justice, collaborating six countries (Egypt, India, Indonesia, Turkey, Tanzania and UK). writing and doing research on messianic movements in 19th-20th century Java (1998).
